Mooncakes have been a part of the Chinese culture for over 3,000 years and are part of many other Asian cultures as well. It symbolizes one of four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

Each adds something different to the food that shows which season it celebrates. The pastry is also filled with different flavors such as red bean paste in springtime, green tea in autumn, or… well… anything!

This mixture of flavors creates a unique experience for each individual mooncake. This is why the mooncake is so popular; it has many different flavors and a unique experience each time.

Traditional Vegan Mooncake Recipe

Prepare Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Yield: 4 servings

Recipe Ingredient

Mooncake Skin:

  • 1/2 cup almond flour
  • 1 Tbsp coconut flour
  • pinch salt
  • 1 Tbsp granulated sugar of choice
  • 10g vegetable oil
  • 4 pinch of baking soda
  • Some mirin for brushing during baking

Mung Bean Paste Filling:

  • 50g split mung bean (soak overnight)
  • 2 tsp of rice malt
  • 2 tsp of toasted sunflower seeds
  • 5g vegetable oil
  • Pinch of sea salt


Mung Bean Paste Filling:

  1. Drain mung beans, and mix with rice malt and toasted sunflower seeds.
  2. Stir until the mixture forms a dough.
  3. Set aside while you make the mooncakes.


  1. Prepare the dough by mixing all ingredients together.
  2. Form into small balls, roll each ball out with a thin rolling pin and then shape into little mooncakes (see video for details). 
  3. Bake them at 180°C for 10 minutes. 
  4. Brush with mirin before baking, and then sprinkle on the mung bean mixture.

Since the mooncake has a very broad flavor spectrum, I believe that the best mooncake filling is whatever you like. In my recipes, I will share with you some of my personal favorites:

According to Wikipedia, there are 4 main types of Mooncakes:

1.  Plum: Steamed cake made with soya bean paste, glutinous rice flour, and salted egg yolk filling.

2.  Sake: Soya bean paste, yeast dough, and salted egg yolk filling.

3.  Taro: Glutinous rice flour, soya bean paste, and salted egg yolk filling.

4.  Ripe taro: Red bean paste, glutinous rice flour, and salted egg yolk filling.

When Should You Eat Mooncakes?

The mooncake is eaten on occasions such that its shape correlates with the time of the year or there are important events in the celebrator’s life (birthdays).

It usually has higher popularity around Spring and is usually less popular around Summer due to its’ lower flavor intensity (or lack of) compared to other seasons.

What Goes Well With Mooncake?

Mooncakes are usually eaten with tea (usually without milk) or eaten by themselves. When I post my new recipe for mooncakes, I will include what I believe is the best type of tea to go with it.

Are Moon Cakes Healthy?

I would say that moon cakes can be healthy and unhealthy:

They can be healthy if they are homemade (it is common to add less unnecessary sugar) and eaten in moderation.

They are unhealthy if they are bought at a store that adds too much sugar or any other kind of additive.

If you have type 2 diabetes, it’s advisable to eat this in moderation. I cannot tell you never to eat these because it depends on your lifestyle and dietary needs.

Where To Buy Vegan Mooncake?

I have only been able to find Vegan moon cakes at my local Chinese supermarket. I believe every supermarket has regular moon cake (Soy Bean Paste, Yeast Dough, and Salted Egg Yolk) but not vegan ones.

I have been able to find Vegan Thumbprint Moon Cakes at the Chinese Supermarket in my area, but it is really hard to find them since they only make so many.

I have been able to find Traditional Mooncake Filling at Asian Grocers or Whole Food Stores, or even online. It’s pretty easy to find if you do a quick google search.

How Long Do Mooncakes Last?

Very long. I have a few in my fridge right now that I bought a year ago, the filling is still fresh, and the skin is still soft. The only downside is that you need to store it somewhere cold because you can easily soften the skin if you let it sit at room temperature.

Should Mooncake Be Refrigerated?

I would say yes! Mooncakes are very thin. They are also very fragile and tend to break easily if not treated with care. It’s better to keep them refrigerated so they last longer.
